The proposal was right for the project and made the points that it needed to make. I think the proposal was ambitious as I have made the film and has turn out to how I wanted the film to be. As I was the cinematographer, director, producer, writer and editor. So I been to about 4 jobs to many. So making this film has been the most challenging short film have made and I was doing 5 jobs.
Sources The main sources of inspiration were a couple of film, these really help develop how I was going to tell the story and the way I was going to film them more than any other parts of the research that I did. As I could see how other film that have been successful use ways to tell a story and the ways they filmed it. Then testing the different ideas that I wanted to try and had seen it the other films. As well as the camera test that help me get use to useing the C100mkii as this was one of the first film I was doing with it. Over all the research that I did helped a lot to develop the film.
Development of ideas
The development of the ideas for the film happen as I was writing the script as it was the adaptation of a script the I had all ready wrote a couple of months before I started this project. Thats why there where about 9 versions of the script. There was none of the original script that the film was based of by the time I was at versions 9 of the script. The ideas of the film I was developing all the way thought the making of the film as the story was evolving.
So there many little problem like there are with anything you do, but there was one very big problem that I had. That was where so of the location did not get back to me as well as the face that half the cast had not replied to messaging and this all happen about 3 days from filming. This I was very close to quitting the making of this film, that I had been working on for 8 week every single day with out having a brake. This problem made me lose all the determination that I had to make the film. But I got round this after taking a brake from working on it and having some down time. I ended up not filming on Monday and was read writing part of the script, after I had some of my close friends volunteer to play the main characters and cut the of characters from the film. So with a lot of work i mange to change the film to work and was able to film it in 2 day that I had planed to film in all ready. So in the end the timeline for the film stand on track and did not effect the post-production timeline at all.
Development of skills
Some of the skills I develop in the making of this film were light with a very tight lighting kit that was about after the kit that I was wanting for the film, it had 2 more lights that are LED and bicolour as well there are not a spot type so are a very good area light for the reason. Another skill is how to solving very big problems and work round them.
So what I had aimed to do I did and I told the story in the way I wanted to tell it and the film work well with it. As well the film makes sense that is really good as i went in to the project just wanting to make the best film I could and I think that I have done that with the tools I had, and we all ways learning and gaining more and more knowledge over doing this. That I can take to the next project that I work on as well. It has also proved that I am a filmmaker but there one thing that i am not planing on doing any time soon is directing and writing a film, as I know that i not good at it.
In all the ways how having very think go wrong I think it was for the best as I have leant how to deal with those type of problem and working on my next film it will help. As this is a skill that i will learn over time and experience work in projects.
In conclusion the film i think the success full even know the that I changed some big parts of the film, I also Learn a lot in the ways that I work on set and what types of preproduction I need to do to get the best results on set and in the film.
So well my project was going well but I have had the a lot of problems happen.
The first problem I had was the the last 2 locations did not respond after contacting them weeks ahead of filming. One of the location that did not get back to me is the bar the make the film work and with out that location I would not bar there would not be the start or end to the film. So to solve this problem I have had to rewrite the start and end of the script. So that I don’t need a bar and coffee location as i will have changed the script.
The second big problem I have had is that over half the cast dorp out on me or did not reply to any text/Emails or call that I made. So I started to ask other people I know. I asked my friend at the brit school, other at uni doing drama and also my friends doing drama at A-level. But after ask all of them there all busy as there got exams for uni, A-level or just unavailable. So I had exhausted every single thing I could think of.
So It got to the point that I was going to give up but when I was canceling the first day of filming, and I spoke with 2 members of the crew and both of them told me not to give up and also suggested ways that I can tell the story but only have 2 characters and not have the bar scene, but still have the whole film work and tell the story. As that is what I am doing is telling story more than anything. So today I have done a rewrite of the whole script as well I redone the short list and call sheet all ready to start the shoot a day later and also its now only a 2 day shoot this takes some of the stress out of the film as there not as many days, but it does add the stress of having to shoot it in 2 days. But with the sport of my crew it will be able to happen and go to plan.
Over all I had very thing that could possibly, did go wrong, and that I could not plan for if any anything like this happened. But I do that I had got to a point that most people would not be able to recover from, as they would have lost the drive to keep going and just given up. But i was so very close to do that but instead I was able to just keep going and work the problem to the point that I could see the light at the end of the tunnel and I just did not stop when I got the as I the was even more alive with the idea, than I was at the start of the pre-production. So over all have all of these problems have made changes for the good and have told me how to adapt the film to make it work. But if i go back in time I would not change anything as this has been the best learning experience that i could possibly had in making this film.
So I yesterday was a good test to see how my camera did, it also allowed to become more efficient with my camera no set.
Today I did a lighting plan and then finished of the shot list and did some more sketchbook work along with the contact the of the actor for monday. But I still need to get the actor for the main female role in the film as I have not had a reply from the girl that I was wanting to carst. So I have contacted a different actor that may be able to play the part if they’re about for the filming dates. The rest of the planning for the film is going to plan. It is just the parts where I am having to rely on other people that has gone wrong. But that is the part that alway seem to go wrong.
I am also having to get a new hard drive to allow me to store all the date from film this week coming up.
I have finished making my shot list on the script but now I need to make this shot list into some that will work no the set and is easier to read.
I did some work last night and i when to finish it to day I found out that it did not save so I had to spend the morning redoing the work.
I so when and did a location scout to day in regate to find some location for the film and I there are a couple of different place that I going to film at. Here are some photos from the scout.
I also start to work on the call sheets for the filming days and I am planning to film it in 3 days if need have a four day.
So today has gone well so far as i am get close to the filming days. Next week i am shooting a second short film for 2 days that should go well.
So to day I did the pitch for my film and that seemed to go well and I feel that I got the point of the film over well.
I also did a little bit of research into camera sliders, as there is a camera move that wanting to do in the film to add a slow pushing in and slow pull out scene. This research I am going to continue working on it tomorrow.
I also have been working out my shot list for the film. Has I have been going thought the script there are a couple of changes that I going to make to the script as I feel it will work well. I also have been think about the lighting as well, while going through the and seeing how I going to light some scene.
So today I have final of the 3rd draft of the script this means that I now can start to plan the shorts for the film and also can set out the filming day so i can work out how is needed on what days.
The casting call is also going well as I now have got 9 applicants for the film on starnow and I am still going to talk to my friend that is at the brit school to see if they know anyone that is interested in play a role in the film.
I also have sent a message to Ted Sim that work for the lighting company aperture, to see if they will seen me some light for the film. There a high possibility that they will not send me any lights.
Looking at how the project is going it going well and going to plan with only 2 weeks to go till filming.
So I have started working on a 3 draft of the script that is just some changes to me the story work a bit better.
I also have sent out a casting call to get the actors from the film, I did want this to have been done by the end of last week so that put me a little bit behind where I wanted to be. But this has allowed me to build up the characters more, they will help the actors.
But the I do feel that the project is moving forward as I getting close to the filming dates.
I have got 2 people to read over my script and check for mistakes in the spelling/ grammar and if the dialog works or not. So I now have a second draft of the script and it also reads a lot better than it did. I also have start to sort out the information I need to put out a casting call for my actors.
Had a meeting with my composer to talk about the music for the film. We settled on a rough idea for the type of the music I wanting for the film. I also have had a actor drop of as they have got pay work come up when I going to film.
So I have hit the fist bump in the road to say but i will keep going.
So I have a first draft of the script that need to go over as there’s a lot of spelling and grammar changes needed. But it does give the idea of how the story is going to work and the rough running time of the film that is about 7 to 8 minutes.
Also been talking to the person doing the sound for the film, to get the gear need sorted out along with the date for filming.
For the cast of the film I have got 2 actors for the film already casted and I going to do a casting call for the other 4 characters this week.
So the last 3 day have been very useful and progest the film to the next point and i going to do some research into some film festivals to enter it in to when its finished.
So I have now got a 4 draft of my proposal that should be the final draft of it that allow’s me to get on with the script and finish writing the script. Also I have wrote up and looked at the results from my camera test the other. I am very help with the images that I am getting from the camera and how it is holding up in post. I am plane to get the script finished in the next couple of days. So I can start planing the filming days.
